For years, the people of Israel had been waiting for a hero. They wanted a military commander, a fierce political leader who would ride into Jerusalem, overthrow the oppressive Roman government, and restore their nation to its former glory. Jesus deeply disappointed those expectations.

In Mark 14, Jesus is standing trial in the middle of the night before the most powerful religious leaders in the country. They demand to know if He is the Messiah. Jesus breaks His silence and says, “I am.” But He doesn’t stop there. He weaves together two massive Old Testament prophecies from Daniel 7 and Psalm 110.

He tells them they will see Him “sitting on the right side of the Almighty and coming on the heavenly clouds.” This was a mic-drop moment. Riding on the clouds was imagery exclusively reserved for the Creator of the universe. Jesus was unveiling that He wasn’t just a local, political rebel; He was the divine, cosmic King over all of creation.

The religious leaders were horrified and sentenced Him to death. They couldn’t handle a King whose kingdom didn’t fit into their earthly political framework. This week, we are confronting our own expectations. Do we try to domesticate Jesus to fit our cultural preferences, or do we surrender to the awe-inspiring, untamable King of the cosmos?
