Death feels painfully final. When we stand at a graveside, the logic of the world tells us that the story is over.
In Mark 12, an elite group of religious leaders called the Sadducees approached Jesus. They didn’t believe in the resurrection of the dead, so they tried to trap Him with a ridiculous, convoluted, hypothetical question about marriage in the afterlife. They wanted to prove that eternity was a foolish concept.
Jesus masterfully cut through their cynicism. He didn’t quote a complex theological treatise. Instead, He went straight back to the burning bush in the book of Exodus. He reminded them that God told Moses, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Notice the tense. God didn’t say, “I was their God.” He said, “I am.” Jesus unveiled the staggering reality that God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. His covenant with His people is so powerful, so unbreakable, that it outlasts the grave. The Sadducees had underestimated God’s power. This week, as we conclude our Unveiled series, we are anchoring our hearts to the absolute certainty of the resurrection. We serve a living God, and because He lives, our hope is eternal.
