Have you ever watched a movie where the final twist completely changes how you view the entire story? Suddenly, all the hidden clues snap into focus, and everything makes perfect sense. It’s like the veil is lifted and you can see everything clearly.
When we think about the Easter story, our minds naturally go straight to the empty tomb. But before we get to the miracle of Sunday morning, there is a breathtaking moment of “unveiling” that happens on Good Friday—a moment that permanently altered how humanity interacts with God.
Mark 15:37-38 (CEB) captures it perfectly: “But Jesus let out a loud cry and died. The curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.”
To understand the sheer magnitude of this moment, we have to understand the purpose of that curtain. In the ancient Jewish Temple, the sanctuary housed the Holy of Holies—the literal epicenter of God’s presence on earth. Separating that sacred space from the rest of the world was a massive curtain. Historical accounts tell us it was incredibly heavy and as thick as a human hand.
For centuries, that curtain sent a clear, unyielding message: Keep out. God is holy, humanity is broken, and the gap between the two is simply too wide for us to cross on our own. Access to God was strictly limited.
But the moment Jesus breathed His last breath on the cross, the ultimate sacrifice was paid. The debt of our brokenness was canceled. And at that exact second, inside the Temple, that massive curtain violently tore in half.
This Easter, the torn curtain is the ultimate unveiling of God’s heart for you. It means the days of separation are over. You no longer need to earn your way into God’s presence, and you no longer need to hide behind your own veils of shame, fear, or past mistakes. Because of Jesus, the doors of heaven have been thrown open. You are invited to come exactly as you are into the arms of a loving Father.
The veil is gone, the tomb is empty, and His grace is entirely free. He is risen! Praise be to God!
