As we make the final turn toward the end of Advent, the pressure mounts. Many of us carry a low-grade anxiety through life—a feeling that we need to perform to be accepted, or that if people really knew us, they’d leave. We work hard to secure our future and earn love.

This final week of Advent is an invitation to drop that anxiety and rest in ultimate security.

The manger is God’s ultimate answer. The Incarnation is the legal and emotional proof that God is irreversibly “for us.” Paul argues that if God didn’t even spare His own Son to save us, why would He withhold anything else we need?

Paul then lists the things we fear most: trouble, hardship, danger, sword. He doesn’t promise that being loved by God will exempt us from these things. He promises something better: that none of those things can separate us from God’s love. We are connected to Him through the difficulty.

Because of the arrival of Jesus, you are secure. You are loved with an inseparable love. You don’t have to earn your seat at the table this Christmas; it was purchased for you before you were born.
