Have you ever met someone who is incredibly smart, knows all the right answers, but completely lacks compassion? In the religious world of Jesus’ day, this was a common problem. The religious elite had memorized the law, debated the theology, and perfected their outward rituals, but their hearts had grown cold.
In Mark 12, a legal expert approaches Jesus with a massive theological question: “Which commandment is the most important of all?” There were over 600 commands in the Jewish law, and the scholars loved to argue about which ones carried the most weight.
Jesus doesn’t take the bait to start a theological debate. Instead, He cuts straight to the heart of God by fusing together two ancient texts from Deuteronomy and Leviticus: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, being, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus unveiled a stunning reality: you cannot separate your devotion to God from your treatment of people. God does not care about our perfect church attendance or our impressive Bible knowledge if we are actively ignoring, judging, or exploiting the broken people right next door. The legal expert realized that loving people was far more important than burnt offerings, and Jesus told him he was “not far” from the Kingdom. This week, we are exploring how to move the truth from our heads into our hands, ensuring our love for God overflows into radical love for our neighbors.
